I’ve been rereading Secrets of My Hollywood Life (again) and I wanted to put out my ideas of how Kaitlin and Sky looked. It’s just so clear in my head. Due to their frenemy dynamic about the obvious good, down to earth Hollywood starlet vs implied partier, superiority-inferiority complex, more willing to be paparazzi bait.
Buffy and Faith! Right down to Skylar/Faith chiding Kaitlin/Buffy for being such a goody-goody.
Okay in seriousness, though I see the Buffy and Faith frenemy dynamic, when I picture Kaitlin, I primarily imagine Ellen Marlow (book fans may recognize her as the Claire Lyons actress for The Clique movie)
For Skylar, Samantha Boscarino. Maybe it’s because she played a Skylar in Good Luck Charlie, and she has the long raven hair Sky is described as having.
Kaitlin could also be Bridget Mendler tbh
Admittedly even though Austin is described as blonde and athletic, I could only picture him as Shane Harper. Clearly my Good Luck Charlie watching was a big influence when I got into the series.
Anywho, Calonita left Kaitlin and the gang with pretty bright futures. Kaitlin at college with her new hit sitcom. She and Austin going strong. Liz at NYU. Skylar following the same model as Kaitlin and mellowing out. Same with Matty. Nadine starting her own agency. Mrs. Burke laying off of Kaitlin and being less narcassistic.
But with the era of revamps and reboots. Meg Cabot bringing back the Princess Diaries for her adult fans with two extra sequels showing grown-up Mia, and now Lisi Harrison bringing back The Clique nearly fifteen years later to see where the girls ended up in their adult lives. . . I want to see Kaitlin again!
I want to know how she and the others are handling Hollywood in the streaming era, the Tiktok trends, pressure to get instagram followers in order to get roles, increased scrutiny, the struggle to find original material and not a reboot, the nepo baby debate. Plus if the new book is for adults, maybe touch on the new atmosphere post #Metoo, #OscarsSoWhite, and the P.Diddy revelations.
Hollywood must have different rules in 2020 than 2008-11, and Kaitlin must have new secrets to share about how she’s handling it all. I could see her get into producing and directing like Gina Rodriguez (with Liz in tow), and maybe starting a quieter lifestyle with Austin as she takes the reins of a new aspect of Hollywood. Austin, I could see him becoming a star lacrosse player himself or becoming a coach for kids (he’s always been laidback like that). But those are just my imaginings. Calonita was so good at crafting their relationship from their first bumps in communication and jealousy, and maintaining a love-work balance, that she’d probably do it better. She is the creator after all.
But still if all these 2000s faves are coming back, let’s hear it for Secrets too. Comment below with hashtag ideas.
