Jughead Vol. 3 Review

Remember how I said there was Reggie and Jughead bonding last volume? Well, here Reggie is once more a bigger part of the gang than he was in the other New Archie series. And it is during his inclusion in the gang’s video game competition that a bet goes terribly wrong. Jughead bets Reggie king for a month if he beats all of them in a racing video game.

Much to Jughead’s horror and video game skill ego, Reggie easily crushes him multiple times. And what does Reggie want as king for a month (besides being carried and fed grapes)- a band!

The Reggies much as Archie’s alternate band name suggestion.

It’s a very fun story where I genuinely chuckled at the jokes and visuals like Hammerhead Archie’s face in the video game as well as other weird yet funny asides. North uses more slang than in the previous volume due to the inclusion of viral videos in this story arc but does so in a way that isn’t forced and actually fits the meaning.

So different kinds of humor are present here from quips, situational to slapstick. Not to mention Reggie forcing Jughead to write the band’s song with the most Jughead-esque, hilarious lyrics ever! It’s a real treat. The surprising friendship between Jughead and Reggie also highlights the hidden Reggie depths under his egotisicalness as he creates the Reggies.

Not only that but it also details a sweet Betty and Jughead moment which shows how Jughead is such a good friend. Except to Veronica, they still get on each other’s nerves which reflects how North gets Jughead.

The second half of the volume brings the town of Riverdale together (with a cool Toni moment. And cameos from MLJ properties, Ginger and Suzie when Jughead fruitlessly tries to mooch money off from them with his friends gone). Again, love that Jughead has another chowhound to compeate with) along with the return of Sabrina/Jughead friendship and the introduction of Josie and the Pussycats. It all comes together in one big magical mistake that again, I can’t tell you. You have to read for yourself especially for Charm’s shift to Afterlife with Archie art

This is another great addition/finale to Jughead comics that will have readers salivating for more just like Jughead salivating after burgers.

But if you’re still eager for more Jughead in your life (and who wouldn’t), take a gander at Sina Grace’s Jughead’s Time Police.

After a terrible, food-poisoning mistake, Jughead is banned from the Annual Riverdale Bake-Off. Unable to bear the exile, he hires the help of Dilton to create a time machine so that can undo his mistake. However, time whmy logic is as confusing as ever and his actions compromise the time stream and its many alternate dimensions. That’s when January McAndrews of the Time Police steps in to help make Jughead set things right.

But there’s another player at work, January is allied with another, (evil!) Jughead who look the 40s version yet talks like a 20s gangster. He wants to win at this dimension game and will eliminate our Jughead to do so!

The book is filled with Charm’s art in fun futuristic settings, homages to the original Time Police series, Back to the future/Matrix/Terminator references and a surprisingly satisfying panal of Riverdale’s version of Jughead getting punched in the face. All this and more as Jughead saves time(s) and proves the powerful love of friends and burgers triumphs over all else!
