The Lunar Chronicles: Wire and Nerve Review

This graphic novel continuation of the Lunar Chronicles puts Iko in the spotlight which is a relief as the android realizes she is the forgotten Earthen hero of the war.

The art does a decent job, a bit simple but each character is distinct and recognizable, Iko getting the best detail of them all. I do have three things to critique. 1) The mutants sometimes look more like yetis than deformed werewolf hybrids. 2) Winter’s scars which are a prominant point in highlighting her beauty despite and because of Levana’s actions are hardly noticeable. 3) Scarlet is depicted as a brunette though that might be the best the colorist can do with a black and white palette.

Ah yes, android prejudice is still prevelant in society despite her help with the war and the revolution and being Cinder’s best friend. But somethings are hard to break like Iko’s programming. She feels useless on Luna so she hops on the chance to go to Earth where Cinder needs someone who can take on the rogue wolf mutants that are still hiding out.

Though the book is short, it does an excellent job laying out the problems Cinder is facing as she suggests abdication and election for the new Lunar society. We get to meet Thorne’s parents and see a bit of why he’s so devil-may-care towards others. And yes, there’s soldier Kinney.

If you remember from Winter, Kinney was one of the soldiers that defected toward Cinder’s side because he cares for Winter. While he belives in new Lunar society, his anti-android prejudice is strong. Especially against Iko though the hatred is semi-mutual.
Semi because Iko can’t help but notice his handsomeness and net dramas indicate that this constant fighting is a cover-up for romantic tension. Not so true for Kinney but his outburst reveals how affected he is by Levena’s reign when he accuses Iko of being just like her, as android is incapable of feelings and she should stop making a mockery of Earthers and manipulate them into believing their good.

Yeah, that guy has some issues.

He’s not the only one as Alpha Steele is gathering up the remaining mutants to strike back at Cinder whom he believes is withholding a cure for their deformities because she’s secretly waiting for a time where she might use them again as Levena did. Though Iko tries to dissuade him and tell him the truth of Cinder’s good character, he is persistant in his belief. Like I said, some prejudice and views run deep leaving for an exciting cliffhanger.
