Pretty Little Liars: Burned Review

The Liars are on their senior eco-cruise where things and a person are going overboard.

This book was a bit disappointing after the thrill of the others especially as it doesn’t even talk about what happened in Iceland when A implied it would in the epilogue of Stunning. So I’ll keep it short as the “secrets/lies” the girls are being blackmailed about are just continuations from the last book.

Emily falls for yet another bad girl- this time a fugitive on the run who has a suspiciously similar story to Emily that she had a best friend whom she loved who manipulated her to doing bad things; Hanna bonds with her former enemy Naomi Zeigler but soon suspects she’s the new A; Spencer thinks Naomi is not only A but after also after her new boyfriend, and finally, the other possible A is Graham, Tabitha’s ex boyfriend who is coincidentally on the same cruise as them and getting quite close to Aria.

The girls continue their paranoia and try to hide the long trail that is behind them though this time I found the red herrings to be unconvincing. Graham just seemed way too unlikely to have been the A, while he may have had the motive I doubt he could stalk them from NJ and be able to predict where all of them would be, he doesn’t know them that well. But I guess that was to show how paranoid Ali has gotten them

Naomi, also had a motive and I’ll admit Shepard still has her skill in that I was (un) convinced that she could be the new A. But it is also part of the formula that the girls be wrong until the last second so even though I did second-guess myself I also believed that in the end Naomi would be innocent and Hanna would ruin yet another potential friendship.

The book’s saving grace that even though it provided no solid conclusions like it did in the end of the last arc books, at least it provided another piece of the missing summer and revealed what happened in Hanna’s car crash. I won’t reveal the secret but the results ended up fueling more of the Liars’ guilt complexes and leading them to the most sensible resolution that instead of adding more crimes for A to blackmail them with. It’s time to fight back, let’s hope it adds more juice into gear for the next arc.
