The Princess Diaries #1-3 ReRead

After finishing Stephanie Plum I decided to dive into a new reread with The Princess Diaries since my memory is a bit spotty after the first two books.
We all know about Mia Thermopolis and her eventual reign of Genovia’s throne whether it is from the beloved series or the movies starring Anne Hathway.

So here goes, rereading it I am reminded how delightful it is. Cabot really hits the mindset of a teenager with the roving swings between utter happiness, angst and preoccupation with self but also wanting to be part of the bigger picture and save the world.

I adore how it really echoes a journal by having fun top 10 lists and to do lists and scribbles from Mia’s homework, it just makes it more real. Yes it is also dated to early 2000s but I am a 2000s girl so I enjoy the nostalgia.

Plus it really makes Mia a memorable protagonist as she bears everything to her diary from her hiccup attack when her father reveals that he is the prince of Genovia and she is the princess to her enviromental rights crusades on the behalf of the horseshoe crabs so she turns down a benefit with the mayor to just the humilation and horror of your mom dating the algebra teacher. She is just relatable, okay.

Furthermore the books are just funny from Mia’s grossed out reaction to finding out she is the sole heir because of her dad’s testicular cancer to her utter devotion to Fat Louie to the weird violin-playing Boris who is always locked in the study hall closet to Grandmere being inadvertedly groped by a blind man. There’s a lot more moments I could name but those were the first few to pop into my head. It’s just hilarious, insane but hilarious.

As for the other characters, Lily is annoying. I remember why I didnt like her and I admire that Mia is slowly standing up for herself as she realizes and pushes back against Lily’s intellectual superiority and pushiness. Tina is a sweetheart. Lena is a classic mean girl. And Michael is. . . well I get the swoon-worthiness as he is hot and emo but I still think the age gap is a bit weird because going to college is just a different mindset from still a high-schooler, you know.

Plus the series is a great balance of princess lessons and high school hijinks and . . I know I keep saying this but it is simply fun. Fun and frothy and delightful to read like watching your awkward best friend babble all about hersef on television. You love her but you also can’t help but find entertainment in her embarrassing moments.

I’m not going much into the plot of each as they all sort of the beginning of Mia’s journey. Her first interview, her first prom, not many life changes yet but they’re coming, I know they are and I can’t wait to rediscover them.

Ta ta for now, it might be awhile till I get to the next ones since my library thinks it’s okay to only get a few books from a series and leave you hanging. Same with the Pretty Little Liars, what library has all the books from one series EXCEPT the first or last book?
