Sabrina the Teenage Witch Vol 2 Review

So I absolutely loved the last issue of Sabrina and this continuation delivers more epic witch battles and displays the strength and growth that Sabrina quickly acquired during her hectic first month.

So Sabrina solved the general monster problem of Greendale but she still is on call to help Radka with the wendigo problem or she’ll spill Sabrina’s secret to the entire school. Not the best idea since Radka would inadvertedly reveal herself to be a wendigo but then again, mean girls never think they’re threats through.

But this is a lot more nuanced than just mean girls.

Sabrina is trying to handle things on her own like any teenager would but she is also finding her own sources for help. One such source is Della the Head witch of the council.

I was so hyped that Della made an appearance here! From what I could tell she was a mainstay in the 60s-90s but after the Sabrina tv show and the new Chilling Adventures, she was almost forgotten. I was actually worried she’d be replaced by Madam Satan, so I’m so glad she made her glamorous, callous appearance here as a mentor to Sabrina when she recognizes her talent.

Part of that mentoring is learning the witch dual gamesavoir faire that is like a magical chess game where you try to anticipate your opponents’ attacks and use them against them to win. This can range from practice to hone one’s powers to death battles.

And. . . well it gets a lot more spoilery from here on out so all I’ll say is that the love triangle heats up to a fevered pitch that I don’t know which to choose much less who Sabrina will choose.

Radka and Ren ended up having an even more mysterious past and curse related to them that just brings a lot more questions.

And then for the grand finale, Uncle Ambrose appears! And he looks so suave!

Remember the portly Uncle Ambrose from the comics? He got an upgrade. He looks like the CEO of sophiscation and hands Sabrina an invitation to the most prestigious magic school-The Academy. You know it’s big when it just goes by one name.

And it just ends there on that freaking cliffhanger with all these questions still swirling about the Ransom siblings and Sabrina’s Spellman mega-powers and hot Ambrose (it really through me for a loop okay). The book was released in 2020 and in the two years since she has appeared in the new Archie series by Nick Spencer in the appropriately titled Archie and Sabrina (and in the Archie-Katy Keene special) but that has no bearing on this series. It doesn’t continue her journey and is more about her relationship with Archie which I know some people like, but it’s not my priority. I want more of this.

Hopefully they’ll be more news when it comes to celebrating her 60th anniversary. They’re revealing her new nemesis Amber Nightstone, might as well anounce a new 5 issue volume. Fingers crossed.

Back to the story, it was wonderful wrap up of this adventure with an intriguing cliffhanger, and filled with the Sabrina humor and charm. The one nitpick I have is the art consistancy.

It’s still by Veronica and Andy Fish, but one of them must have took more of the lead here and makes it look like it was a completely different illustrator. It does the job but it lacks the fluidity and magic-awe of the previous volume. It made everyone look too cartoony.

Also if you’re a fan of Hida and Zelda, like in the last volume, they’re not featured much here to allow Sabrina the chance to shine and figure things out on her own, but if the series continues, who knows? Maybe we would have had more Sabrina and aunt adventures, hint hint!

So the combined nitpicks of the art and the far too long cliffhanger with no end in sight, I bring this to 4 stars. I want more!
