I found this in my search for my comedoc mysteries like Stephanie Plum. While funny, I found it to be more like a comedic action flick on steroids.
The titular Bobbie Faye has tremendous bad luck. As she sees it “A day without a disaster is a day in someone else’s life.” There are insurence policies for those who suffer a Bobbie Faye disaster. She accidentally burned the high school down. The governor of Louisiana tried to trade her to other states, and later to the US government and the Russian government as a secret weapon. And with those kind of disasters surrounding her, she is not in the happiest of moods.
Especially today of all days. The day of Charlestown’s Contraband Festival (real thing) where she is the Contraband Queen, a legacy left to her by her mother. Today is also the day the social worker is coming in to see if she’s a fit guardian for her niece while her sister is in her upteenth rehab. And her trailer is flooded. And her damn womanizing brother who said that he’d fix her washing machine is not picking up the phone.
Turns out he has a good reason being that he is the current captive of the mafioso, Vincent who wants the Contraband Queen’s tiara.
It seems like a simple switch. While it has sentimental value of being the only special possession of her late mother, it is pretty much a useless hunk of tin. Why a mafia boss would want such a thing, she doesn’t know but she’s not going to question it when her brother’s life is on the line. However, this is Bobbie Faye we’re talking about. On her way to pick up the crown from the safe, she ends up entangled in a robbery.
Now she’s on the run from the cops (one of her which is her smoldering ex boyfriend who still has feelings for her), and the FBI who are tracking the unwitting stranger she inadvertedly took hostage (Yeah it’s a lot, but it makes sense as you read).
There are explosions, there are gunrunners, there are hoodoo matrixes, there are car crashes and car chases and several wild animals and near deaths. See what I mean this is an action comedy on steroids. That ridiculous is part of what makes it so funny. Others may find hard to suspend their disbelief but I found it exciting and wild.
Not only is the action engaging, but Bobbie Faye is quiet a fun character. She’s a prickly girl, impulsive and hot-tempered but that comes from being the eldest, responsible sibling who tries to care for everyone without help even at the expense of herself. Her wry, cynical perspective only enhances the funny scenes and witty comments of an outlandish cast. Plus Causey is a native LA-er so she adds a distinct jokes and reactions that I suppose represent the Lousiana native view of such crazy events, with Bobbie Faye commenting that as much as they drive her crazy, Lousiana people stand by each other even though they’d also be the first to pick off your stuff at a garage sale.
Unfortunately I can’t find the other books in my library so I won’t review the others, but it is well worth the read if you want something fun.
