Top 5 My Sister The Vampire

Does anyone else remember this series by Sienna Mercer? I do and I think other people should read it too for a light Buffy the Vampire Slayer esque middle grade series (think Buffy flair and integration of vampires in real world, not the show’s violence and darker themes).

Vampilicious

The fourth book was an excellent wrap up of the series in how long list twins, the vampire Ivy and human Olivia finally figure out the whole story concerning their birth and the implausibility of it all. Not to mention, the heartwarming bonding Olivia and her Dad try to embark on after years apart. Plus the way their friends and family come together to resolve their love issues as well as their few conflicts. It was a wonderful end or so I thought. Until I found out on the internet there were ten more books after this!

Fangtastic

The second book in the series follows the life-changing announcement that vampires are real! Of course, we readers know this from the first book and how they keep their secret underwraps in a sort of subculture hidden in plain sight. But after one of the idiot boys decide to brag about their fangs on live tv, a reporter is determined to confirm out the truth. This was a fun book to see how increasingly unhinged the reporter becomes to get her story with a real suspense on how close she is to uncovering the truth. Luckily, Olivia and Ivy use some twintuition to save the day from the increasing Salem Witch-Trials hysteria rising up.

Lucky Break

This book has double duty in creating a sci-fi adaptation of Romeo and Juliet written by Olivia’s best friend that she is determined to attend. However, she is stalled by her work on the local movie (oh yeah she is working in the movies now. Small town girl becomes a celebrity, it’s a trope) and her attraction to its teen star. Meanwhile, Ivy has some doubts about how well she can fit in with the human side of the family. Not that they know that she’s a vampire, but when she visits with her mom’s sister, her aunt, she feels so uncomfortable and keeps making mistakes, it makes her wonder if her mom would have loved her and if her aunt will ever accept her. The grief and loss from Ivy’s subplot is truly engaging while cyborg Romeo and Juliet is absolutely hilarious so its a good balance.

Love Bites

Olivia goes to Transylvania to meet the extended vampire family and some royalty. Of which she is making one faux paus after another with these stuffy relatives. It was a fun look into the inner vampire politics of the world with lots of star-crossed love drama thrown in, and not exactly from who you’d expect.

Switched

The first book in the series is a solid intro into the world of Franklin Grove where new girl, Olivia Abbot is eager to meet new friends and join the cheerleading squad. What she doesn’t expect is to meet her gothic twin. The two seem to be complete opposites, but it’s not just their similar looks that is creepy but they both share an emerald ring. . . . dun dun dun they both surmize they must be related and thus the twin hijinks ensue. Not only do they resolve to find out the truth to their parentage but Olivia works to help Ivy out with her crush while Ivy’s superior athleticism helps Olivia cinch tryouts. However, Ivy has a secret (as if it isn’t the title), how will she reveal this hidden world to her newfound family?
